USAID and Australia Empower Communities in Northern Thailand to Mitigate Environmental and Social Impacts of Infrastructure Development
In Northern Thailand, communities along the Mekong River face negative environmental and livelihood impacts from infrastructure development, such as upstream dams and rapids-blasting for a river navigation channel, which affect natural resources critical to local communities and, hence, their economic resilience.
To meet this challenge, the USAID and Australia Mekong Safeguards Program is collaborating with Rak Chiang Khong Conservation Group to develop a digital library that shares data and local knowledge to raise awareness about infrastructure development on the Mekong and its effects on communities. The digital library launched in December 2023 and is accessible via the website of the Mekong School, a local environmental education institution (www.mekongschool.org).
This collaboration between the U.S., Australia, and a local conservation group strengthens the advocacy for regulatory protections to support lasting conservation of the Mekong’s ecology, enhancing the economic resilience of communities and contributing to security and inclusiveness throughout the Mekong subregion and the greater Indo-Pacific.
